Arizona Senate Democrats address the events of June 24, 2022

June 25, 2022

PHOENIX – Despite misinformation and fearmongering, Arizona Senate Democrats completed the work of the people last night.

Last night, peaceful protestors gathered on the capital lawns to mourn and express anger over the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The protest was attended by families and young children. As the night went on, a small number of protestors moved to the Senate building and began an attempt to enter the building – but were unsuccessful.

We unequivocally condemn violence in all forms, and anxiously await the investigation results to explain the response of law enforcement. Democrats believe that the people have every right to peacefully take part in the democratic process. In this time of great sorrow for our nation, we ask that everyone refrains from violence to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Right-wing media and lawmakers calling this an "insurrection attempt," are weaponizing this moment to deflect from the actions of January 6th. No attempt to interrupt the business of government is ever acceptable when lives of lawmakers and staff are threatened.

A bipartisan budget and water package were successfully passed in the final week of session. We are grateful for the work each of our caucus members, Senate staff, security, the broadcasting team, our wonderful pages and research team, and the custodial staff. The people's work would never be completed without each person that shows up and gives their all to Arizona every day.

In this moment, please use your anger to build political power and push your community to the polls this November. The fastest way to ensure your rights stay protected at the state level is to elect a legislature and Governor who respect a woman's right to choose.
