Press Release

PHOENIX – Senators Sally Ann Gonzales (LD20) and Theresa Hatathlie (LD6) released the following statement in celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day: “This day is an important reminder of the work we have done and the work we have yet to accomplish to ensure this land is a place of equal opportunity for all,” Senator Sally Ann Gonzales, a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, stated. “The rich history of Indigenous peoples is marked by unwavering perseverance and pride in our heritage and right to selfgovernance. Since time immemorial, Indigenous peoples have occupied these lands, built and sustained powerful Nations, and established vibrant communities. Our commitment to protecting tribal sovereignty is steadfast, today and always.”

Senator Theresa Hatathlie, member of the Navajo Nation, added, “In many ways, Indigenous Peoples’ Day fails to recognize the true contributions of native people to this country. But, with good partners in the Biden-Harris Administration, for the first-time true federal investments are uplifting our native communities where it matters most. The American Rescue Plan delivered the largest direct Federal investment in Tribal Nations ever, specifically targeted to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to Tribal communities. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is the single biggest investment in Tribal roads, bridges, water, high-speed internet, and more. The Inflation Reduction Act is the biggest investment in fighting climate change ever, which is a direct threat to native communities across the country. We have a long way to go but our momentum is strong, and I am confident that with continued work from DC to Arizona, we can deliver real results for native communities.”
