Arizona Senate Democrats Announce New Majority Leadership

PHOENIX, AZ — Arizona Senate Democrats announced their leadership team for the 58th Legislature as the party prepares to hold an outright Senate majority for the first time in more than three decades. The incoming majority will make lowering costs for Arizona’s working families its top priority.
“We heard you loud and clear. Arizonans rejected partisan extremism and chose a new direction,” said Senate President-elect Priya Sundareshan. “I am proud of what we accomplished together during my time as minority leader, and I’m ready to lead us into the next chapter. Early returns show our caucus on track to grow from 13 to 20 members, a historic supermajority. We don’t take that trust for granted. I’m excited to build on the work of our talented returning elected senators and welcome the newly elected members who will bring fresh ideas and perspectives to our caucus. We’re united in our commitment to earn your trust every day by delivering results you can feel in your daily life. That means lowering costs for working families, keeping our communities safe, and giving every Arizonan a fair shot at getting ahead. Wherever you live and whoever you voted for, we’re here to work for you.”
• Senate President-elect Priya Sundareshan (D-18) was first elected to the Senate in 2022 and led Senate Democrats during the 57th Legislature. A mother of two, she has championed voting rights and worked to protect Arizona’s natural resources for future generations.
• Senate Majority Leader-elect Christine Marsh (D-5) is a public school teacher who previously served in the Senate from 2021 to 2025. She fought for public school funding and helped pass legislation to legalize fentanyl test strips.
• Senate Majority Whip-elect Analise Ortiz (D-24) began her legislative service in the Arizona House in 2023 and joined the Senate in 2025. She helped pass protections for workers facing extreme heat and has strongly advocated for childcare and homeless services.
As her first order of business, President-elect Sundareshan appointed Alma Hernandez (D-20) and Edgar Soto (D-17) as Senate President Pro Tempore and Rosanna Gabaldón (D-21) and Aaron Lieberman (D-4) as Senate Democratic Majority Chairs.
