In what was an unfortunately foreseeable tragedy, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. She was a 37-year-old woman, a U.S. Citizen, and a single mother. Video circulating shows federal agents confronting the driver in the middle of a residential street, an agent drawing his firearm and firing three times into the front of her vehicle.

In response to this shooting, the State Senate Democratic Caucus released the following statement:

“We are horrified and deeply saddened by the killing of a 37-year-old woman by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. The disturbing footage underscores the danger of conducting aggressive, militarized enforcement actions in our neighborhoods.

Despite claims by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that the shooting was an act of self-defense, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, after reviewing the video, disputed that version of events.

This tragedy is a devastating example of the fear and instability caused by the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda. These operations are not about public safety, they are about intimidation and political extremism, and now they taken an innocent life, which, in turn, has left a six-year-old child parentless.

This community is left traumatized, and a family is now grieving because ICE agents, acting under Trump administration directives, exceeded their legal authority and violated DHS policy. The investigation into this woman's death demands full transparency, accountability, and independence.

As ICE prepares to intensify enforcement actions in Arizona, we want our communities to know this: Arizona Senate Democrats will stand with you. We will work to protect our constituents and hold federal agencies accountable when their actions endanger lives and public safety.

Let us be clear, immigrants are not a threat. They are our neighbors, our coworkers, and essential contributors to Arizona’s economy and communities. We stand with Minneapolis and with families across the country who are living in fear of enforcement tactics that prioritize cruelty over humanity.”
