PHOENIX – Arizona State Senator Theresa Hatathlie (LD6) and Senate Democratic Assistant Leader Catherine Miranda (LD11) expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family of Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, who tragically lost his life while in the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“I am heartbroken to learn that another life has been lost in an ICE detention facility," Senator Hatathlie stated. "The treatment of individuals in these facilities raises serious concerns about the humanity and accountability of ICE operations. Families and communities deserve answers.”
“I am absolutely devastated by the death of Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, who was a beloved son, brother, and friend. His death was not only untimely, but it also could have been prevented,” added Senator Miranda. “It is infuriating that no matter how many people die while under ICE custody, there seems to be no consequences for the officers involved.”
Senators Hatathlie and Miranda are calling on ICE to provide a full explanation regarding the circumstances of Mr. Batrez Vargas’ death and urges the agency to ensure that the rights and dignity of individuals in its custody are respected.
They also encouraged community members to remain vigilant and to continue looking out for one another's safety.
“Law enforcement, including ICE, is meant to protect the community. That protection includes holding officers who are responsible for the mistreatment of individuals to be held accountable,” said Miranda. “Lorenzo’s family deserves answers regarding his death.”
“Our communities are strongest when we take care of each other,” Hatathlie added. “We must hold institutions accountable while continuing to uplift and protect one another.”
