PHOENIX - Senator Anna Hernandez (LD24) released the following statement following Governor Katie Hobbs signing HB2720, or the Casita Bill.
“Today is a huge day for housing policy in Arizona. I am thankful that Governor Hobbs has signed HB2720 and 2721, which moves Arizona in the right direction when addressing the housing crisis in our state.

Since joining the Arizona State Legislature as a Senator, I have made fixing the housing crisis and undoing the harm done by exclusionary zoning in Arizona a top priority for me. One place I saw a pathway towards more affordable housing was with the deregulation of accessory dwelling units (ADUs), also known as casitas. In historic neighborhoods, casitas used to be allowed but were regulated out. I wanted to see that come back and be an option for all of our neighborhoods, and this bill opens that pathway. HB2720 will requires certain municipalities to adopt regulations that allow ADUs on any lot or parcel where a single-family dwelling is allowed.
I really believe in this policy because it is the something that will benefit generations to come. It is showing that we are committed to finding bipartisan solutions to our housing crisis and while I know this is not the answer to every issue we see, this is one tool that we can put in the hands of cities.
I look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to work towards an Arizona where everyone can access affordable housing.”
