PHOENIXOn Friday, Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed SB1164, the “Arizona ICE Act.” If signed into law, SB1164 would have prohibited Arizona’s public agencies and any political subdivision of the state from enforcing any policy preventing them from cooperating with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Senate Democratic Leadership released the following statement:

“If the Arizona ICE Act had been signed into law, it would have had a chilling impact on Arizona’s public safety and immigrant communities by requiring Arizona’s public agencies to comply with ICE.

In the last 88 days, we have seen Trump illegally disappear hundreds of immigrants without due process. If the Arizona ICE Act was law, our state’s law enforcement would be required to assist in that unconstitutional process.

Trump’s recent actions make it abundantly clear that he believes that he can deport, incarcerate, and disappear any person without legal consequences as long as he does so before the court can intervene.

By vetoing the Arizona ICE Act, Governor Hobbs has sent the message that Arizona does not cosign the Trump Administration’s plan of mass deportation and disregard of our nation’s constitution.

Thank you, Governor Hobbs, for standing for the rule of law and with Arizona’s immigrant communities and communities of color by vetoing the Arizona ICE Act.”
