PHOENIXThe United Nations officially designated June 20 as World Refugee Day in December of 2000 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. It is an international day to recognize refugees around the globe and celebrate the strength and courage of the people who have been forced to flee their homes to escape conflict or persecution due to their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of a particular group.

Senator Flavio Bravo (Phoenix - LD26) released the following statement honoring World Refugee Day:

“Arizona historically has had one of the highest numbers of refugee arrivals of any state. In west Phoenix alone, there are more than 60 languages spoken, so I know personally that immigrants play an essential role in our state and are the backbone of our society.

Refugees make tremendous contributions to our economy as earners, taxpayers, and consumers. The majority of them quickly integrate and become self-sufficient members of their respective communities by joining the workforce, paying taxes, supporting local commerce, helping to address labor demand in critical industries, and creating new jobs.

But they don’t just contribute economically, they contribute culturally. With them, refugees often introduce their new community to diverse traditions, customs and perspectives, which results in a more dynamic and vibrant atmosphere.

As the current Trump administration continues to pass an unprecedented level of cruel and inhumane policies that ban refugees and suspend foreign assistance, strip asylum protections, and expands immigration and deportation, it is more important than ever that we stand with our immigrant communities. These actions are not representative of what America should be and they do nothing but hurt our country while also causing division and fear.

I believe that everyone, no matter where they were born, deserves a safe place to call home. I believe in building communities that welcome everyone, and I promise to continue working on ways the Arizona State Senate can better meet the needs of refugee communities to support their long-term integration.”
